Demonstration - Wed 12th Sep, Shire Hall

Post date: Sep 10, 2012 10:17:44 PM

Join us at the demonstration outside Shire Hall in Gloucester from 9:20 a.m. on Wed 12th September.

That morning the County Council's Cabinet will be meeting to agree to sign the contract with Urbaser Balfour Beatty to build the incinerator....even though planning permission has not been granted and there will be penalites incurred by the Council should planning permission be refused...

Will the Cabinet agree to sign given that the Council's own Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee has issued a recommendation not to do so. Read their report here.

Their report cites a number of concerns:

  • the private nature of the Council discussions around the incinerator, which are felt to be more appropriate to be conducted publicly, given the public interest
  • the potential for conflict of interest whereby the planning department may feel pressured to grant permission for the incinerator in order to avoid the penalties that the Council would incur if planning were refused
  • the size of the plant given the expected lower levels of household waste actually being produced, meaning the incinerator would be about dealing with commercial waste
  • entering into a contract before planning is granted (if it is) when it could be done the other way around.

Thank goodness a part of the Council now shares many of the concerns we have been airing!
